The Fall River Valley is located where the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range meets the Cascades. The Valley was originally used for Fort Crook to protect travelers on the Shasta-Yreka Rd and the Lockhart ferries in 1857. In the Fall River Valley you will find many farms and ranches, and gorgeous state parks such as Ahjumawi, a lava springs park that is only accessible by boat. The park has crystal clear waters and huge trout. It is even complete with Native American fish traps. Ahjumawi is truly something you must witness. The valley is also known for a multitude of different recreational activities, as well as highly productive farm land. Birding, Eastern Shasta County is an exceptional birding area. In the spring and the fall, in particular, it’s possible to see 50 to 60 species in a day. With so many lakes, streams, and wetlands, vast numbers of waterfowl stop to rest and feed on their migrations making the Fall River Valley an attraction to waterfowl hunters. A few birds that reside in the valley include nesting bald and golden eagles and osprey, sandhill cranes, and American avocets. Prairie falcons and peregrine falcons nest in the canyons of the Pit River. Goshawks and spotted owls may be seen and heard in the forests.
